About Us

Who We Are

We are Mary and Michael and we live on this beautiful Southern Illinois farm that has been in Mary's family since 1949. For many years we have both been interested in polyculture and sustainable farm practices. Mary had a lifelong dream of owning Alpacas, so we made that dream a reality when we took over the farm.

The farm has slowly grown to have multiple different animals. Most of our animals are heritage breed or rare breed animals such as our Kune Kune pigs, Saxony ducks, various chickens, turkeys, and Suri Alpacas.

The Farm History – Where it all began

The John Hood Home is the oldest home in Washington County. The house was finished in 1843 and was a station on the Underground Railroad. The house is the oldest building in our county. Preserving and teaching local history is part of our mission at Hummingbird Acres.

The farm passed to 2 other families after John Hood, before Mary's grandparents purchased the farm in the 1940's. There have now been 4 consecutive generations of the same family living in this home, on this farm.
